Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas declined on Sunday to comment on the contents of the report regarding the fire at the Kalo Chorio firing range, noting that he has read almost the entire report and will finish reading it by Monday, paying, as he said, close attention.
In remarks made after the conclusion of the national memorial service in Pachyammos for those who fell during the battles of Tillyria in 1964, and when asked about the findings regarding the fire, Mr. Palmas recalled that the Commander of the National Guard had handed it to him last Friday.
He pointed out that although he has reviewed almost the entire report, he cannot say anything more on the matter, as the police’s criminal investigation is still ongoing.
“I can’t say anything more about this,” he said, noting that anything else said at this time could create “some problem or a few problems” for the criminal investigation.
Therefore, he continued, we must await the completion of the criminal investigation, which will then be forwarded to the Legal Service.
When and if this process is completed “regarding any findings pertaining to matters related to the disciplinary investigation”—which concern the Ministry of Defense and the National Guard— the Ministry will issue a statement, he said.
When asked if he had singled out any specific points from the findings, Mr. Palmas said that there are some points that stand out. However, as he noted, he will remain firm and consistent in his position that he cannot say anything more at this time.
