Recently, there has been an increase in reports from citizens regarding scams involving phone calls from numbers that appear to be Cypriot.
When the call comes in, a pre-recorded message is played stating that the call is from the National Police Security Office and that the citizen’s personal information is linked to suspicious activities.
Citizens are then asked to select a number, and the call is transferred to a person who identifies themselves as an official. This person claims that bank accounts have been opened in the citizen’s name at financial institutions located in Cyprus and that large sums of money are being transferred through them. Through this scheme, the perpetrators seek to obtain bank account information and other personal data in order to extort money.
The public is urged to be particularly cautious and not to disclose their personal or banking information. You should always verify any calls or messages you receive through the official and published communication channels of the relevant organizations. If you receive a similar call, end the call immediately.
