The Municipality of Nicosia has prepared a package of proposals that will contribute to the revitalization of the Makarios area, which will be presented to the City Council during its upcoming meetings, Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Pruntzos told a DISY delegation that visited City Hall.
A statement from the Municipality regarding the visit noted that after Mr. Prountzos thanked the DISY delegation for their visit and the interest they have shown, he reviewed the municipality’s achievements over the past two years, discussed ongoing projects, the financial situation, the significant challenges facing the city, and the consequences arising from the fact that Nicosia is a partially occupied city.
“Special mention was made of the municipality’s financial data. Specifically, the new Municipality’s minimum actual needs amount to €35 million, compared to a state subsidy of €22.5 million for the 2025–2026 period,” the statement added.
At the same time, the announcement continues, the mayor outlined the municipality’s development plan, with particular emphasis on the SOPAZ area and the opportunities that may arise, referring to it as the city’s largest development project and possibly the largest in Cyprus.
The mayor also stressed the importance of creating a metropolitan park on the grounds of the State Fairgrounds, stressing that the Engomi Municipal District and all of West Nicosia need their own green space.
“The issue of Makarios was raised for discussion during the meeting, with the Mayor making it clear that the Municipality has prepared a package of proposals that will contribute to the revitalization of the area. The package will be presented to the City Council during its upcoming sessions,” the statement notes.
At the same time, it is noted that he expressed his hope for support from the government and the relevant authorities, following the meeting held at the Presidential Palace, in which he participated alongside the Deputy Mayor of Nicosia. “Support from the parliamentary parties will also be crucial for the adoption of revitalization measures that require parliamentary approval,” the statement adds.
According to the announcement, for its part, the Nicosia parliamentary group of the Democratic Rally documented the problems and suggestions raised by members of the Nicosia City Council, such as the issue of state subsidies to municipalities, the Neighborhood Police Officer program, and the traffic issues facing the capital on specific avenues during rush hour.
The DISY delegation included Nicosia MPs Dimitris Dimitriou, Andreas Konstantinou, Charalambos Petridis, and Savia Orfanidou. Representing the Municipality at the meeting, in addition to Mr. Pruntzos, were the Deputy Mayor of the Nicosia Municipal District, Chrysanthos Fakas, the Deputy Mayor of the Aglantzia Municipal District, Andri Hatzandreou, the Deputy Mayor of the Engomi Municipal District, Panikos Konstantinou, the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal District of Agios Dometios, Konstantinos Yagou, as well as members of the Municipal Council at Nicosia City Hall.
