There have been five cases of West Nile virus in horses in the Paralimni area.
According to a statement, following confirmation of the cases, the Veterinary Services immediately took the necessary steps for epidemiological investigation and monitoring. At the same time, the Ministry of Health was notified, and the cases were reported to the European Commission and the World Organization for Animal Health.
According to reports, following confirmation of the first case, four additional cases were identified as part of the epidemiological investigation.
“The response to the West Nile virus is being coordinated by the relevant agencies, in accordance with established protocols. In this context, the Veterinary Services are monitoring the situation among animals, while the Public Health Services are taking the necessary measures for mosquito surveillance and control.”

As the Veterinary Services clarify, the virus is not transmitted from horses to humans or from horse to horse. Transmission occurs primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Equines, like humans, are considered accidental hosts and do not constitute a source of further transmission of the virus.
The Veterinary Services, as they emphasize, are closely monitoring the situation and, in collaboration with the relevant agencies, will continue to evaluate the epidemiological data, taking, where necessary, further measures to protect animal health and public health.
