A package containing 6.1 kg of cannabis was discovered and seized at the Larnaca Airport warehouse.
Specifically, on October 16, 2026, Customs Department officials, following a successful analysis of information in the electronic import system, proceeded to inspect a courier package that had arrived from a third country and was flagged as suspicious for drug trafficking.
During the initial X-ray inspection of the package, suspicions were further confirmed, and during the subsequent physical inspection of the package—which had been declared to contain a canvas painting— a quantity of cannabis with a total gross weight of 6 kilograms and 110 grams was found behind the painting, inside airtight nylon packages.
The drugs were seized by the Customs Department and handed over to the D.A.O.E. – YKAN for further action, as part of the coordinated efforts carried out by the two agencies to prevent the importation of narcotics into the Republic of Cyprus.
Members of the DAOE, at around 3:30 p.m. yesterday, following an operation, arrested a 39-year-old man who had arrived to pick up the postal package. He was accompanied by a second man, aged 67, who was also searched by police officers.
The 67-year-old was arrested on the spot after a brown solid substance weighing approximately 2 grams was found in his possession. Subsequent investigations revealed evidence linking the 67-year-old to the quantity of cannabis found in the postal package that the 39-year-old had received.

The 39-year-old and the 67-year-old were taken into custody for the purpose of investigating a case involving the supply, importation, and possession of narcotics with the intent to supply them to others.
The case is being investigated by the D.A.O.E. (Larnaca Narcotics Unit).
