A spectacular and rare phenomenon appeared in the Cypriot sky. These are red sprites, which were captured on camera by a resident of Nicosia today, October 6.
What Are Red Sprites?
Red sprites are primarily red in color, are primarily observed above severe thunderstorms at altitudes ranging from approximately 40–50 kilometers up to about 90 kilometers, and are indirectly associated with positive-charge lightning (Positive Cloud-to-Ground lightning strikes), as KitasWeather had previously explained.
Red Sprites fall under the category of “transient luminous events” (TLEs = Transient Luminous Events), a category that also includes other rare luminous phenomena such as Blue Jets, Gigantic Jets, Elves, and others.
