Two Israeli women arrived at Paphos Airport carrying boxes of duty-free cigarettes.
According to a statement from the Customs Department, department officials at the airport, on Monday, September 21, following an assessment of intelligence, the two passengers, whose luggage contained large quantities of cigarettes, whose packaging did not bear the “smoking is harmful” warning in Greek and Turkish, nor did it include the security feature or the unique traceability code, indications that they were untaxed.
Specifically, a total of 19 cartons, each containing 200 cigarettes, were found in one passenger’s luggage, while 10 cartons, each containing 200 cigarettes, were found in the other passenger’s luggage.
The passengers were arrested on the spot for offenses committed in flagrante delicto, and their luggage and its contents were confiscated. They were later released after their requests for an out-of-court settlement were accepted, with payments of €1,140 and €600, respectively. The confiscated cigarettes will be destroyed in accordance with established procedures.
