Despite the difficulties and problems that still exist, teachers gave their very best again this year to make the children’s first day of school as wonderful, creative, and joyful as possible, POED President Myria Vassiliou, told CNA.
“Our goal was, and remains, for every child to leave school today with a smile and positive feelings about the new school year,” she said when asked to assess the children’s first day of school.
At the same time, however, Ms. Vasiliou noted, “We cannot overlook the problems our schools continue to face.”
“There are still staffing shortages, and issues remain regarding school infrastructure, the installation and operation of air conditioning units, as well as prefabricated classrooms, which in many cases continue to be a part of the daily lives of students and teachers,” she added.
According to her, the understaffing of kindergartens in the positions of assistant principals and principals is also a cause for particular concern.
As Ms. Vassiliou stated, adequate administrative staffing in schools is essential for their smooth operation and, by extension, for providing quality education to children.
“Today belongs to the children, and we want to uphold the optimistic spirit of the new school year. At the same time, however, we must all work to ensure that this optimism is accompanied by safe and suitable schools, adequate staffing, and the conditions that every child and every educator deserves,” he concluded.
