Parents are reacting to the fact that the first bell at elementary schools is set to ring on September 14, with the Minister of Education citing legislation and regulations in her response.
In remarks made following the Cabinet meeting, when asked to comment on the reactions, Athina Michailidou she stated that there are laws and regulations that specify exactly when schools begin.
“No deputy minister, no educational organization, nor any parents’ associations decides this. So we know exactly when middle schools, high schools, and technical schools start—the second Monday in September, which this year happened to be September 14 for elementary school children.”
He noted that schools around the world close for vacation, pointing out that the state offers many options, such as summer schools, the number of which is growing and multiplying, as well as summer camps.
He emphasized that it is important for children to spend time with their parents and grandparents.
