When will the new dormitories at the University of Cyprus be built, and how much funding is being provided to support students?

How many rooms are allocated to new arrivals, and based on what criteria?

One hundred rooms in University of Cyprus dormitories will be made available to incoming students based on socioeconomic criteria, the Head of the University of Cyprus’s Office of Academic Affairs and Student Services (OASS), Kleanthis Pissarides, noting at the same time that the university is in discussions with the relevant authorities regarding the construction of new dormitories.

When asked how many students they expect to welcome in September, Mr. Pissarides stated that, as classes begin on September 7, they essentially expect to welcome a number similar to previous years, “which means about 1,300 new students,” adding that they are looking forward to welcoming the new generation of students to the University of Cyprus.

When asked if there is interest in living in the University’s dormitories, Mr. Pissarides noted that there is considerable interest in the dormitories, but because allocation is based on socioeconomic criteria, the number of students who meet the requirements is limited.

“We will generally provide about 100 rooms for all incoming students. We recognize that demand is higher. We are trying to help wherever we can. And we expect that the housing issue will be resolved overall once the University of Cyprus dormitories are built—a project we are currently discussing with the Ministry of Finance, among others,” he adds.

Responding to a follow-up question on the matter, Mr. Pissarides states that “we are in the consultation phase with the government regarding the studies required before we can begin.”

“We hope that if this process moves forward promptly, the construction time will be at least about two years for the first phase of the dormitories so that some rooms will be available,” he notes.

When asked whether the University provides any additional assistance, Mr. Pissaridis explains that, as a rule, the Student Welfare Association provides financial aid to support students with financial needs.

“This is something for which we begin the relevant process in October, and we always strive to disburse the funds before Christmas, based on socioeconomic criteria,” he adds.

Mr. Pissarides also notes that they are looking forward to welcoming the new generation of students to the University of Cyprus.

“A new journey is beginning for them, and we encourage them to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead, to grow both academically and personally. Through the University of Cyprus, they will have many opportunities, and we truly encourage them to take full advantage of them,” he concludes.
