The release of Cypriot and foreign prisoners is taking place starting today, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce overcrowding at the Central Prison, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Justice.
Among those released are Cypriot and foreign prisoners serving sentences for minor offenses, who met specific criteria and received a presidential pardon ahead of the Feast of the Assumption, following a recommendation formulated in collaboration with and with the approval of the Office of the Attorney General.
At the same time, the prescribed procedures are underway for the return or deportation of foreign nationals convicted of minor offenses whose asylum applications have been rejected and who meet the legal requirements. A number of them will be deported immediately, while procedures are ongoing for the remaining cases.
Efforts to reduce overcrowding in the Central Prisons and police detention centers will continue using all available and lawful means, in full compliance with national legislation and international conventions, with respect for the rights of detainees, and without compromising public safety.
