Students and teachers are entitled to safe, modern, and functional schools, OELMEK President Konstantinos Konstantinou, told KYPE, adding that public education deserves modern infrastructure.
When asked about the Audit Office’s findings regarding shortcomings in design, safety, and supervision of prefabricated school classrooms, Mr. Konstantinou said that the Audit Office’s report—which states that prefabricated classrooms, intended for emergency and temporary needs, have in many cases become a permanent fixture in public schools, unfortunately confirms what OELMEK has been pointing out for many years, namely that the problem of overcrowding in certain schools is very serious and raises serious issues regarding both functionality and safety.
“We are not opposed to the use of prefabricated classrooms when they are used for a short period of time and to address genuine emergencies. What is unacceptable, however, is for them to remain in place for years as a substitute for regular school infrastructure,” he added.
He noted that students and teachers are entitled to safe, modern, and functional schools.
“The quality of education is directly linked to the quality of the school environment. We cannot talk about upgrading public education when there are still schools operating with temporary solutions and no clear prospect of permanent solutions. “The Audit Office’s report on the lack of comprehensive planning, the absence of up-to-date data, and delays in the development of school infrastructure should give all those responsible cause for concern,” he added.
Mr. Konstantinou also noted that OELMEK is calling on the Ministry of Education and all relevant stakeholders to immediately proceed with comprehensive, long-term planning for the construction of new school facilities, wherever and whenever needed, with clear timelines and adequate funding.
“Public education deserves modern infrastructure. Our teachers and students deserve schools that inspire a sense of safety, dignity, and hope. This is not a luxury; it is the state’s obligation,” he concluded.
