Be Careful with Chargers and Extension Cords: How to Use Them Safely

What to Look for When Buying Them
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The Department of Electromechanical Services issued guidelines on the safe use of extension cords and chargers for electronic devices in a statement.

As stated in the announcement, as part of the investigation into the recent fire at a residence in Deryneia, it was determined that an extension cord, also known as an “extension,” was being used to charge a cell phone.

The investigation into the circumstances, as well as the devices involved, is ongoing; however, on this occasion, the Department would like to remind the public of basic guidelines for the purchase and safe use of extension cords and chargers for electronic devices.

Extension cords

When purchasing and using extension cords:

  • Make sure they bear the CE marking and comply with the BS 1363 standard.
  • Check that they have visible, legible, and durable markings that cannot be easily removed and include the product’s basic technical specifications.
  • Make sure the product’s type or model number, as well as the manufacturer’s information, are listed.
  • Do not use cords that show visible electrical or mechanical damage or any wear from previous use.
  • Use extension cords only occasionally and when absolutely necessary. They should not be used for the permanent power supply of devices.
  • Keep the cords away from flammable materials.
  • Do not run them through doors, windows, or other movable parts, as they may be damaged.
  • Do not use them to connect high-power electrical devices.
  • Do not daisy-chain two or more extension cords together.

Chargers for electronic devices

When purchasing a charger:

  • Choose the charger recommended by the device manufacturer to ensure compatibility and safe operation.
  • Make sure it bears the CE mark.
  • Check that its key technical specifications, such as voltage (V), frequency (Hz), power (W), and current (A), are clearly labeled.
  • Make sure the product’s type or model is listed, along with the manufacturer’s or importer’s contact information.
  • Check that it comes with instructions and safety information in Greek.

All markings must be visible, legible, durable, and not easily removable.

For safe use of the charger:

  • Do not use a charger or cable that shows visible damage, deformation, or worn insulation.
  • Do not leave devices charging unattended.
  • Do not charge devices near flammable materials, such as fabrics, paper, or carpets.
  • Keep the cord loose and do not pull on it, as this may cause damage.
  • Make sure the charger has a three-prong plug or is used with a suitable and safe converter or adapter.

For more information or clarification, the public may contact the Department of Electromechanical Services at 22800522.
