In a walkout on Wednesday, September 16, during the fourth class period, at the same time that the Parliament’s Education Committee is meeting, the PSEM calls on students to participate, demanding humane conditions in schools, safe and dignified schools, a reduction in the curriculum, respect for students’ voices, and substantive responses to their demands.
“More than a week has passed since schools reopened, and, unfortunately, we are still watching the same old story unfold. Those in power continue to make promises and then renege on their own timelines. The Minister of Education had committed to completing the installation of air conditioners by the end of 2026. Today, the President of the Republic, in his remarks, referred to a new timeline, pushing completion to the end of the government’s term, that is, to 2028,” the PSEM states in its announcement.
It notes that students cannot wait any longer, adding that humane and dignified conditions in their classrooms are not a luxury.
PSEM also notes that despite the circulars and students’ victories regarding summer attire, several school administrations continue to ban shorts.
“PSEM’s letter regarding the relevant circular remains unanswered by the Ministry,” it notes.
At the same time, he continues, “the infrastructure of several schools is still considered unsafe, while the overwhelming amount of material has already turned the school year into a marathon to cover it all before exams, despite commitments to reduce it.”
“The Ministry of Education’s dismissive attitude—assuming that everything is running smoothly in schools and that there are no problems—is infuriating,” he adds.
He notes that the students will not back down from their demands nor tolerate the disparagement of the student community.
“The Ministry of Education must finally listen to our voices. We are asking for nothing more than what we are entitled to. We are asking for the obvious. We are fighting for our future, and we will not back down,” concludes PSEM in its statement.
