The Minister of Education were analyzed by the Minister of Education before the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights.
As Athina Michailidou explained, the effort focuses on enabling students and teachers to utilize artificial intelligence in an ethical, appropriate, and balanced manner, based on the guidelines provided to schools. The primary concern, however, is fostering critical thinking.
“For us, the response to the use of new technologies is neither fear nor uncritical adoption. It is a middle ground, a balanced solution that fosters critical thinking, responsibility, and, above all, the ethical use of new technologies.”
Athina Michailidou – Minister of Education
An important aspect the Ministry is working on is equipping school infrastructure with the appropriate resources.
However, among other things, Athina Michailidou pointed out that restricting the use of cell phones in schools has led to a significant reduction in bullying.
Digital Rights Charter
At the parliamentary level, the next steps are already being prepared to draft a Digital Rights Charter, that is, a modern framework of principles that will enshrine human rights in the digital age.
The goal is for the first draft to be presented to the Human Rights Committee by this fall.
“We hope that the discussion at the Committee level will now be much more specific, with the goal of arriving at a declaration that will be adopted by the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives and will set the framework for the discussion.”
Christos Christofides – AKEL Member of Parliament / Chair of the Human Rights Committee
The Committee’s goal is to promote—in cooperation with the executive branch—specific legislative and administrative initiatives that will effectively safeguard citizens’ digital rights.
