The large fire that broke out this afternoon in the Evkali area, in Pyrga, Larnaca District, has been brought under partial control. According to the relevant authorities, the immediate and coordinated response by firefighting crews prevented the worst from happening; however, the fire burned pine trees, wild vegetation, reed beds, and farmland, while the yards of homes that had not been cleared of weeds and wild vegetation were also affected.
The Forestry Department was put on alert immediately after receiving word of the fire, with the Department’s Press Officer, Glafkos Kyriakou, describing it as a major incident. The “Astrap” plan was activated to combat the fire.
Twenty-two fire trucks participated in the large-scale firefighting operation, while aircraft from the Forestry Department were also deployed. At the same time, assistance was requested from the Fire Department.
The fire destroyed pine trees, wild vegetation, reed beds, and farmland planted with grain. Residential yards were also affected; according to reports, these had not been cleared of weeds and wild vegetation.
Although the flames threatened homes, the timely mobilization of ground and aerial forces prevented the fire from spreading, and the situation is now partially under control.
