Fire breaks out early this morning in Kalliepeia, Paphos; fire department responds immediately

Forest Fire Risk at Red Alert Level, Says the Forestry Department
ALPHANEWSLIVE

A fire broke out on Saturday morning in the Kalliepeia area, in the Paphos district.

The Fire Department responded to the scene with three fire trucks and was supported by a mobile firefighting unit from the Forestry Department and the Game and Wildlife Service.

The fire has been brought under control and burned four decaria of dry grass and wild vegetation, while irrigation hoses were also affected.

It should be noted that, under the “Red Alert” level, the risk of forest fires breaking out and spreading will remain high today due to the massive influx of people into the forests for the Feast of the Assumption, according to the Forestry Department.

In a statement, the Department strongly urges members of the public planning to visit forested areas to be particularly careful and to completely avoid any actions or activities that could cause a fire.

Specifically, it urges the public to avoid lighting fires, using power tools that produce sparks or flames, and discarding cigarette butts and lit matches.

The Forestry Department emphasizes that lighting fires for cooking is permitted only in the barbecue areas of picnic sites.

It also stresses that causing a fire, in accordance with the Forestry Law and the Law on the Prevention and Extinction of Fires in Open Areas, constitutes a criminal offense punishable by severe penalties.

It urges anyone who notices smoke or fire to immediately call 1407 for the Forestry Department or 112 for the Fire Department.
