The police are investigating a new case of online fraud and theft, in which the perpetrators send messages purporting to be from the General Health System (GESY), with the aim of siphoning money from citizens’ bank accounts.
According to a complaint filed with the Limassol Police Department, an 81-year-old woman received a message on her cell phone, with the sender listed as GESY, asking her to pay the amount of 1.50 euros.
The complainant followed the instructions included in the message and subsequently began receiving notifications of attempted access to her online bank account.
The scammers managed to steal a total of 33,424 euros, both from her personal bank account and from another account she manages.
The case is being investigated by the Financial Crimes Investigation Office of the Limassol CID.
As a precaution against such online scams, the police urge citizens to be vigilant, especially when receiving messages containing links.
Citizens are urged to avoid clicking on such links and not to share or enter personal or banking information on unknown websites.
Before making any online transaction or payment, citizens are advised to verify the authenticity of the request by contacting the organization or company listed as the sender through their official communication channels.
If they have already provided bank details through such messages, they should immediately notify their bank to prevent their unauthorized use.
