“The conditions in prisons have crossed every boundary of human dignity,” denounces the “Equality” union, Prison Branch. In a statement issued in response to today’s report on overcrowding at the Central Prison and the large number of inmates convicted of drug offenses, the union raises the issue of building new prisons once again, while describing dire conditions for staff and inmates.
As it states, “the situation has gone beyond all limits of human dignity: 20 to 30 inmates are crammed into a single cell, to the point where they are forced to sleep on potato crates, while the wings are being sprayed for bedbugs.” He speaks of “explosive conditions” and notes that “our fellow prison guards are left helpless to manage this chaos and are risking their lives every day, trying to maintain balance in a ticking time bomb”.
He adds that “for the past 8 months, we’ve been hearing constant announcements about the construction of new prisons. Nothing but words, meeting after meeting, and plans being postponed from month to month—but absolutely no action” —a situation which, as he notes, puts both staff and the inmates themselves at immediate and daily risk—and calls on those in charge to “assume their responsibilities before we mourn victims.”
