On standby to deal with seasonal infections, which are expected to emerge in the coming period, the Pediatric Clinic at Makarios Hospital is on standby; currently, 16 children are being treated there, half of whom have viral or bacterial infections, pediatrician-neonatologist and Director of the Pediatric Clinic, Elena Papamichael, told CNA, noting that the situation is currently under control.

“I believe this marks the beginning of the winter season. We certainly expect seasonal infections, though we don’t know how they will develop,” said Ms. Papamichail, emphasizing that the Clinic is on standby and ensuring bed availability so that it can meet any needs that arise.

She said that efforts are being made to ensure the Clinic remains on standby, that beds are available, and that cases are managed appropriately so that it can respond to any needs that arise, while also highlighting the collaboration between the Pediatric Clinic and the team of pediatricians, as well as with the Organization’s other hospitals.

At the same time, as he noted, the Organization has taken measures to ensure that, if necessary, assistance can also be provided by other pediatric clinics of the Organization in Larnaca and Limassol.

“At this stage, however, the situation is under control,” he said, noting that there is also cooperation with the Department of Accidents and Emergencies, which receives the cases and proceeds with their appropriate management.

Sixteen children are hospitalized, eight with infections

Ms. Papamichail noted that 16 children are currently hospitalized in the Pediatric Clinic, while in recent days the number of cases was higher, reaching 18 to 20.

“Today, we are treating 16 cases, half of which involve viral or bacterial infections,” she said.

Specifically, of the eight children with infections, three have gastroenteritis, two have skin infections, two have pneumonia and are in the recovery phase, and one has viral bronchitis.

As he noted, the children “are in very good clinical condition,” and these are minor cases that do not cause concern at this stage.

Regarding the clinic’s capacity, Ms. Papamichail stated that it stands at 36 beds, while, if necessary, additional support is available from beds in the Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care Units.

“So, we have the capacity to admit more children,” she said, adding that several of the children currently hospitalized are expected to be discharged.

No cases of flu or COVID

The Director of the Pediatric Clinic clarified that, at present, no child with the flu or COVID is being treated at Makareio.

“We currently have no cases of the flu. Nor of COVID. At least not in the Makareio Pediatric Clinic,” she said.

Recommendations for Parents

Addressing parents, Ms. Papamichail noted that, at this stage, there is nothing anything that should cause particular concern, though she emphasized the importance of contacting a pediatrician or family doctor promptly.

“If there are symptoms, such as a persistent fever, a runny nose, or other concerning symptoms, they should visit their family doctor,” she said.

At the same time, he recommended following hygiene guidelines, ensuring good ventilation in indoor spaces, and avoiding close contact with people who may have an infection.

He also made special mention of the need for strict adherence to the vaccination schedule, noting that the issue of seasonal flu vaccination will be addressed in the very near future.

“The important thing is for parents to be vigilant about symptoms, to follow clear guidelines on hygiene and social distancing, and to seek advice from their family doctor,” she said.

According to Ms. Papamichail, vaccinations are expected to begin in November, with December and January marking the peak of the vaccination season.
