Seasonal infections are on the rise among children. The reopening of schools, combined with changing weather conditions, has contributed to the increase in cases. Eighteen children are currently hospitalized at Makareio Hospital, half of whom have viral or bacterial infections.
“However, this is not related to COVID-19, the flu, or RSV. Right now, we’re mainly seeing common cold viruses. Milder cases of rhinovirus and quite a few cases of adenovirus.”
Dr. Zoe Pana – Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology
The pediatric ward is also treating cases of gastroenteritis, pneumonia, and viral bronchitis.
Vaccination is a top priority right now, especially for adults, with Dr. Pana emphasizing the need for the RSV vaccine, which is recommended for the elderly and pregnant women.
“Both the flu and RSV vaccines can be administered by their personal physician. The COVID-19 vaccine is essentially available at specialized centers that can administer it.”
Dr. Zoe Pana – Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology
Seasonal flu vaccinations will begin in the coming days, with the first 60,000 doses of the vaccine already on the island. These doses will be distributed to primary care physicians so they can first vaccinate people over 60 and vulnerable population groups.
