A fire broke out simultaneously in five cells and in the hallway of the maximum-security wing of the Central Prison on Sunday night, causing extensive damage, though no inmates were injured.
According to information available so far, three inmates are alleged to have deliberately set fire to their cells, with flames breaking out simultaneously in five cells and in the wing’s hallway, where a total of ten people are being held.
The call to the Fire Department was received at 10:14 p.m., with the Pafos Gate and Kaimakli Fire Stations responding with three fire trucks. The fire was brought under control at 10:45 p.m.

The fire destroyed mattresses, clothing, and other flammable materials, while causing extensive damage to both the cells and the wing’s hallway, as well as smoke damage.
Central Prison staff immediately and safely evacuated all inmates without putting anyone at risk. They were then temporarily transferred to another wing.
No inmate was injured. However, one member of the Central Prison staff was taken to the hospital as a precaution, as he inhaled smoke during the incident.
The causes and exact circumstances under which the fire broke out are being investigated by the competent authorities, in cooperation with the Fire Department.
