The number of dog-friendly beaches in Cyprus remains at seven.
Two beaches are located in the Paphos district, two in the Limassol district, one in the Famagusta district, one in the Larnaca district, and one in the Nicosia district. Specifically, these are the following beaches:
- Pitili in Neo Chorio, Paphos,
- Acheleia, northwest of Paphos Airport,
- Prolimnos, west of Pissouri,
- Karavopetra, in Limassol,
- Kassianes in Larnaca
- Glyky Nero in Paralimni, and
- Steratzia in Kato Pyrgos
Speaking on the Alpha News program, Chara Georgiadou, Secretary of the Central Beach Committee, explained that “the Central Beach Committee has received complaints regarding accessibility issues at these beaches, and at its most recent meeting, in mid-June, it set specific actions in motion to conduct a review of dog-friendly beaches.”
He also expressed optimism that by the 2027 swimming season, there will be more and better-staffed dog-friendly beaches.
The discussion on the review of the beaches was prompted by the situation in Kalo Chorio in the Paphos district, with Ms. Varnava noting that “the Central Beach Committee will launch a new round of consultations with all coastal local authorities to review the beaches that are accessible to dogs.”
It should be noted that, under legislation passed in 2020, unorganized beaches are accessible to all dogs “provided that the dogs are on a leash and the owners comply with their obligations.”
As clarified, dogs are allowed in the water, but must be on a leash on the beach. Beaches that are part of the Natura network are an exception.
As for organized beaches, service dogs for people with disabilities are permitted by law.
“They are permitted to be on the beach and to accompany their owner.”
