“Shutdown” of the ministry of labor and social affairs’ support programs; employees on indefinite strike

What the protesters are demanding

Starting today, Monday, employees of the Support Programs of the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth are going on an indefinite strike.

According to a joint statement issued last Friday by the PASEY–PEO and OEKDY–SEK unions, the indefinite strike begins on Monday, November 2, 2026, and as part of the strike, employees will hold a large rally and march on Thursday, November 5, 2026, from the Ministry of Finance to the Presidential Palace, “demanding the immediate fulfillment of commitments and the safeguarding of their rights and income.”

As stated in the announcement, the workers were driven to this decision because the Ministry of Labor and Social Security continues to fail to implement the legislation that the Government itself submitted and that was passed by Parliament on April 21, 2026.

They note that while the law governing employment in these programs stipulates specific staffing procedures, the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth does not apply them to all programs and has left several workers unemployed. In positions that were supposed to be filled with fixed-term employees, it is employing permanent staff on an overtime basis.

“Despite the unions’ efforts, the government continues to postpone a policy decision to resolve the issue of payment for those whose employment has not been terminated,” they state, adding that the government’s delay in making a policy decision has left workers without income, without access to unemployment benefits, and without pay for five months. Finally, they call on workers in the Support Programs to participate en masse in both the indefinite strike and the mobilization.
