The Director of the Blood Center, Androula Panagiotou, warning of the risk of running out of blood supplies during the summer. Speaking on the “Alpha Summer” program, she emphasized that daily demand remains consistently high, at 350 units of blood.
As Ms. Panagiotou explained, although there was a positive response from the public last week, the beginning of this week saw a drop in turnout. “On Monday, 100 volunteer blood donors came, and we collected about 120 units,” she noted, adding that immediate needs were met thanks to the supplies from previous days, which, however, will run out if there isn’t a steady stream of volunteers.
She clarified that the goal of 350 bottles is not a theoretical “safety cushion,” but an urgent daily necessity for saving our fellow human beings. “These are real needs. There are people with thalassemia, patients with blood disorders such as cancer and leukemia, surgeries, childbirth, and accidents. There are so many reasons why we need 350 units,” she emphasized.
In closing, the Director of the Blood Center called on all citizens, both those in their home cities and those on vacation, to set aside a little of their time and visit their local blood donation centers. “Our appeal is ongoing, so that there will be no shortages and no human life will be put at risk,” she concluded.
