Part of an international ring that is alleged to have defrauded the tax authorities of fourteen European and other countries, with evaded taxes totaling more than 700 million euros, the Customs Department’s recent seizures of thousands of items of underwear and electrical and electronic goods at the port of Limassol.
Department Spokesperson George Konstantinou explained on the Alpha Kalimera program that the “source” appears to be the origin of the 2,500 containers seized last year at the port of Piraeus as part of an operation codenamed “Calypso,” which was carried out with the participation of European authorities. As he noted, the containers are loaded in China, shipped to Greece, and from there are transshipped and sent to Cyprus. They then return to Greece and are distributed on the market.
Mr. Konstantinou noted that, with regard to clothing, copyright infringements were found, both in terms of design and brand name. Regarding the electrical and electronic devices that were seized, he highlighted the risks they pose to citizens, as they do not meet European safety standards.
