Another femicide occurred early this morning in the occupied territories; the victim was a 61-year-old woman and the perpetrator was a 71-year-old man.

According to reports from the occupied territories, Mustafa Ak, 71, went to the home of 61-year-old Saliha Ozkol early this morning, and under circumstances that are under investigation, at around 6:40, he stabbed her in the neck with a knife in the courtyard of her home in the occupied village of Agios Georgios. He was later found seriously injured at his home in Famagusta, and it was determined that he had attempted suicide.

He is being treated in serious condition at the Famagusta General Hospital. Some Turkish Cypriot media outlets report that the victim and the assailant were previously married.

The women’s organization of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) today called for the “government” to resign following the murder of the 61-year-old woman by her ex-husband. “We cannot wait for another woman to be murdered.” It announced that it will hold a press conference tomorrow outside the “prime minister’s office” to protest femicides and violence against women.

The organization points out that just last month, a woman was the victim of an attempted murder and is still fighting for her life in the hospital. “How many more women will be murdered? A government’s job is not to issue statements after a murder,” it adds. According to the women’s organization of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), these murders are the result of years of unaddressed male violence and gender inequality.

The website Buygün Kıbrıs reports that there were “judicial” rulings, as the victim had suffered violence at the hands of her ex-husband and, there were protection orders and restraining measures against him, while Mustafa Ak reportedly served a 3-month prison sentence in 2025 for committing acts of violence against the 61-year-oldand for violating a protection order.

The online newspaper also has a medical certificate documenting a severe beating of Ozkol by her ex-husband on January 3, 2024. According to a decision by the Famagusta “district court” dated July 21, 2025, which the article cites, Mustafa Ak faces charges of trespassing, assault, illegal possession of a knife, battery, and failure to comply with a protection order.

“The violence was known; there were protection orders in place, and a prison sentence had been imposed. Why couldn’t Saliha Ozkol be protected?” the newspaper asks.
