The British Bases Police made 34 arrests for various offenses last week. Among them were eight cases of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, while authorities are also investigating four drug cases, in three of which substances believed to be cocaine were seized. Meanwhile, in a joint search-and-rescue operation at sea, two men were rescued, while an investigation is underway into the arson of two vehicles in the Akrotiri area.
A statement from the British Bases (BB) Police states that “it has made 34 arrests over the past seven days for various offenses, including eight cases of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
At the same time, it is noted that “police are investigating four separate drug-related cases, in three of which quantities believed to be cocaine were found.”
In total, it adds, “30 road safety campaigns were carried out throughout the BB region, during which 63 out-of-court fines were issued for traffic violations, while 25 breathalyzer tests were also conducted.”
“In yet another particularly busy week for the Northern Cyprus Police, officers in the Dhekelia area confirmed, in the early hours of Saturday morning, the successful completion of a joint search and rescue operation between the BB Police, the Search and Rescue Coordination Center, and the Cyprus Police, during which two men, aged 25 and 37, were located and rescued unharmed one and a half nautical miles from the coast,” the statement continues.
At a time when several drowning incidents have been reported in Cyprus, including the tragic death of a 72-year-old man in the Dekelia area on August 17, Assistant Police Director, Inspector Melina Papagrigoriou, wanted to warn of the potential dangers at sea.
“These incidents serve as a timely reminder that conditions at sea can change very quickly. We urge everyone who uses our beaches and coastal areas to stay informed about weather and sea conditions, avoid unnecessary risks, and immediately seek help if they notice someone in distress,” he said.
At the same time, he added, “An investigation is underway into an arson incident in the BB Akrotiri area, following a vehicle fire on Sunday morning, which, according to the authorities’ current assessment, appears to have been deliberately targeted.”
Police Officer Papagrigoriou also stated that the BB’s assessment is that “one of the vehicles was deliberately targeted and that the fire subsequently spread to a second vehicle, which was parked nearby. Our investigation is ongoing as we continue to examine the motive and the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
