The Municipality of Strovolos is stepping up its efforts to prevent and control mosquitoes.
Specifically, according to a related announcement, the Municipality of Strovolos has intensified its efforts to prevent and control mosquitoes, particularly following the heavy rainfall in August, as part of its support for the work being carried out under the responsibility of the Health Services of the Ministry of Health.
The relevant municipal departments are conducting systematic inspections and targeted interventions exclusively in public areas, such as ditches, manholes, storm drains, ditches, and other locations where stagnant water may accumulate.
Particular attention is paid to areas identified as potential mosquito breeding grounds, including the Parisinos area, the area along Dimitris Christofias Avenue, locations within the Kalogeros River and the GSP Stadium, as well as other areas where conditions conducive to mosquito breeding may arise.

At the same time, potential breeding sites have been identified in certain buildings under construction and in private swimming pools that are not properly maintained. In these cases, the responsibility for eliminating the sources of contamination and taking the necessary measures lies with the owners or managers of the properties.
Locations falling under the municipality’s jurisdiction are monitored, and, where necessary, appropriate and approved control measures are implemented. These include, among other things, the use of appropriate biological formulations, the draining or pumping out of standing water, and the removal or emptying of containers that hold water.
At the same time, the Municipality is collaborating with the relevant departments of the Ministry of Health and, in the event that a case of West Nile virus is detected in a human, it will assist, within the scope of its responsibilities and capabilities, in taking the necessary measures in the affected area, informing residents, and carrying out targeted interventions.
Useful Guidelines for Mosquito Control
Residents’ contribution is equally important. To reduce mosquito breeding sites, they are asked to:
- keep wells, water tanks, and other water containers in their yards or on their property tightly sealed,
- repair or replace damaged manhole covers and tank lids,
- remove old tires, buckets, and other items that can hold water,
- regularly check yards, gardens, and patios—especially after rainfall—and immediately remove any standing water,
- ensure that swimming pools are maintained and operated in accordance with established procedures so that they do not become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Mosquito prevention and control is a shared responsibility. Through the cooperation of the Municipality, the relevant agencies, and citizens, we can reduce breeding sites and help protect public health, the announcement concludes.
Spraying in the reed bed next to the State Fairgrounds
For its part, the Municipality of Nicosia informs the public that, as part of the intensive efforts currently underway to combat mosquitoes, spraying will take place on Monday, September 21, 2026, in the reed bed located next to the State Fairgrounds.
For safety reasons and to ensure that the work proceeds smoothly, the public is asked to avoid using the adjacent pedestrian walkway during the spraying and to follow on-site instructions and signage.
These operations are part of the Nicosia Municipality’s broader program of targeted interventions to reduce mosquito breeding sites and protect public health.
