The Larnaca District Local Government Organization is scrutinizing 278 buildings in the district, which have been designated as historic or of cultural significance and were deemed to require examination as part of inspections for hazardous buildings.
In a statement, the Larnaca Local Government Organization (EOA) states that it is requesting the “immediate cooperation and response” of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Division of the Department of Town Planning and Housing, following the identification and determination that a large number of potentially hazardous buildings in the district are either listed or designated as buildings of cultural significance.
It should be noted that the Larnaca District Planning and Building Authority, within the scope of its responsibilities, has undertaken the registration, assess, and manage hazardous buildings throughout the district, implementing a comprehensive action plan with the primary goal of protecting public safety.
During the inspections, 278 buildings were identified, with the Larnaca EOA noting that “recognizing the importance of both protecting human life and property and preserving the district’s architectural and cultural heritage, it sent a letter to the Director of the Department of Town Planning and Housing,” informing him of the details.
At the same time, “the Larnaca EOA requested information regarding which of these cases have had applications submitted to secure consent for the execution of work, or for which relevant consent has already been secured to beginwork, emphasizing the need to prioritize the review of the relevant requests to secure the required consent, so that the necessary actions can be taken to address these structures.”
The Agency “expects the cooperation and response of the competent Department so that these cases may be examined as a matter of priority and, where necessary, the appropriate solutions may be implemented.”
Finally, it is noted that “the protection of human life and public safety is a top priority for the Larnaca EOA” and that the agency will continue to implement its management plan, strengthen inspections, and collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to address the issue.
