Police on the Streets Ahead of the Feast of the Assumption: What They'll Be Checking

An action plan was approved
ALPHANEWSLIVE

He noted that the police have drawn up the necessary action plans and will be on the streets throughout the entire period, both to ensure road safety through traffic checks and to provide traffic assistance wherever and whenever needed.

“As for the August 15 holiday period, when increased traffic is expected both on the highways and the rest of the road network, the police have drawn up the necessary action plans,” he said.

As he noted, the increased traffic is expected to be seen mainly on the highways, but also on other roads leading to mountainous and coastal areas, where a larger influx of people is expected due to the three-day weekend.

Daily Traffic Checks

Mr. Michael emphasized that police traffic checks, aimed at preventing serious and fatal traffic accidents, are conducted on a daily basis and are not limited to the Assumption holiday period

This week also sees the ongoing pan-European campaign by Roadpol, the European Traffic Police Network, in which the police are also participating, focusing on speeding.

As Mr. Michael said, the campaign began on August 3 and concludes on Sunday, August 9.

However, Mr. Michael added that the Police’s intensive checks cover all serious traffic violations and not just speeding.

According to him, the focus is on behaviors that are primary causes of serious and fatal collisions, including speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to wear a seatbelt or helmet, and using a cell phone while driving.

At the same time, he noted that checks and public awareness campaigns regarding the use of personal mobility devices, such as electric scooters, have been stepped up in recent days.

When asked whether there are any sections of the road network currently considered to be high-risk, Mr. Michael noted that, due to the expected increase in traffic, special caution is required on highways, as well as on roads leading to mountainous and coastal areas.

“There will be more traffic,” he noted, emphasizing the need for all drivers to exercise greater caution.

In conclusion, Mr. Michael appealed to the public to exercise special caution while traveling. “Let’s all be extremely careful on the roads, drive responsibly, respect other road users, and remember that every choice we make on the road can affect people’s lives,” he said.

The police are on full alert, conducting intensive traffic checks in anticipation of the three-day Assumption holiday weekend, as increased traffic is expected both on the highways and the rest of the road network, with particularly heavy traffic in mountainous and coastal areas, as Michalis Michael, an officer with the Communications Division of Police Headquarters, told CNA.

He noted that the police have drawn up the necessary action plans and will be on the roads throughout the period, both to ensure road safety through traffic checks and to provide traffic assistance wherever and whenever needed.
