Residents of Akrotiri staged a protest, expressing strong concerns about work currently being carried out by the British Bases in the area. The protesters are calling for intervention by the government and the President of the Republic, arguing that the area is being placed under even greater strain.
According to a report by Erica Kavazi on Alpha, residents claim that construction work has already begun in the area of the British Bases at Akrotiri and express fears about potential health impacts. As they noted, they are concerned both for themselves and for their children, emphasizing that this is an area that is already under significant strain.
The residents are also directing their criticism at the government, calling on the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, to intervene to halt these specific actions. At the same time, they are questioning why, as they claim, the area is being further militarized without their prior notification or consideration of the local community’s position.
Following the protest, the British Bases Administration issued its first response. According to the statement released, the work currently underway involves maintenance and upgrades and, as claimed, is not related to the “Atlas” project, which is expected to be implemented by the British Bases.
The residents, however, say they are determined to continue their protests. If, as they say, their concerns and demands are not heard, they intend to hold their next protest outside the Presidential Palace.
