Shock over the death of Popi Christoforou: The political world bids “farewell” to the iconic mother

Shock and deep sorrow swept across Cyprus, and especially in the city and district of Limassol, the tragic news of the death of Popi Christoforou, mother of the twin heroes Miltos and Christos, who were killed in the deadly explosion at the “Evangelos Florakis” Naval Base in Mari.

Poppy Christoforou, who fought to honor the memory of the thirteen young men who “were taken from us” on that dark morning of July 11, 2011, waged a long battle with cancer. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the Holy Trinity Church in Limassol.

Through social media posts and written statements, political parties, public figures, and organizations are offering their condolences to the husband, daughter, and loved ones of Popi Christoforou and praising her work and contributions.

We bid a sad and respectful farewell to Popi Christoforou, the mother of twins Miltos and Christos Christoforou, who lost their lives in the July 11, 2011, explosion at the “Evangelos Florakis” Naval Base in Mari.

The loss of her two children was a deep wound both for her and for the entire country. It is our concern and duty to ensure that such tragedies never occur again in the future. 

We express our sincere condolences to her entire family and loved ones.

The National Popular Front (ELAM) expresses its deep sorrow over the loss of Popi Christoforou, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.

Poppy Christoforou will remain in our memory as the mother who, with strength, dignity, and unparalleled fortitude, fought until the very end to ensure that the sacrifice of her twin children, Christos and Miltos Christoforou, who lost their lives in the line of duty on July 11, 2011, in the deadly explosion in Mari. A tragedy that was not a mere accident, but the result of criminal acts and omissions, for which there were those responsible.

We extend our sincere and deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. May they find comfort in the thought that Popi is reunited with her beloved sons, Christos and Milto, whom she was so prematurely and unjustly deprived of.

Poppy Christoforou was a symbol of strength, dignity, and unceasing struggle for justice and vindication, the Democratic Party states in a press release, expressing its deepest sorrow and sincere condolences on her passing.

As noted in the statement, “with admirable courage, she stood tall in the face of the unspeakable pain of losing her two children, transforming her personal tragedy into a lifelong struggle to preserve their memory and ensure accountability.”

“For more than fifteen years, Popi Christoforou carried the unspeakable pain of losing her two children on that morning in July 2011, when the explosion at the “Evangelos Florakis” naval base in Mari cut short the lives of 13 of our fellow citizens,” the statement adds.
