Mistakes That Cost Lives: An “Overview” of Fatalities in the First Six Months of 2026

The causes behind the tragic toll, the most dangerous times of day, and the most vulnerable road users
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The toll from fatal traffic accidents in Cyprus remains grim, as in the first six months of 2026, a total of 22 people lost their lives on the roads, including two victims of traffic accidents that occurred on the territory of the British Bases. Official Traffic Police data for the period from January 1 to the present paint a picture of this year’s fatal traffic accidents, revealing the main causes, which categories of road users “pay” the heaviest toll in human lives, and which traffic violations continue to cost lives. At the same time, a comparison with previous years highlights alarming trends, particularly regarding motorcyclists and careless driving, which remains the most significant factor in causing fatal and serious traffic collisions.

Although the number of victims to date has increased slightly compared to the same period last year, the situation remains a cause for serious concern. As of June 29, 2025, 20 deaths had been recorded from 19 fatal traffic accidents, while 2025 ended with a grim toll of 45 fatalities, marking the highest level in recent years. Despite the measures taken by the relevant authorities to improve road safety, Cyprus recorded, according to European Commission data, a 10% increase in traffic fatalities in 2025—a trend that heightens concern, especially given the country’s small size and population.

An “X-ray” of our dead

According to data presented to AlphaNews.Live by Sergeant Tassos Asiekkis of the Traffic Division at Police Headquarters, Tassos Asiekkis, the number of victims belonging to vulnerable groups of road users is also a cause for particular concern. From January 1 to the present, 11 riders of two-wheeled vehicles and users of light vehicles have lost their lives, including eight motorcycle riders, one motorcycle passenger, one moped rider, and one e-scooter rider. This figure accounts for more than half of all road traffic accident victims during the first half of the year.

During the same period, three pedestrians, five drivers, and one passenger also lost their lives, bringing the total number of fatalities to 20. The two fatalities from accidents falling under the jurisdiction of the British Bases were a motorcyclist and a person who was fatally struck by a vehicle on the highway while changing a tire on his car. The comparison confirms that motorcyclists remain by far the most vulnerable group of road users, as they have consistently accounted for the highest number of fatalities in fatal traffic collisions over time.

Data from the past five years show the same alarming trend. In 2022, 17 motorcyclists, cyclists, and e-scooter riders lost their lives; in 2023, the death toll dropped to six; in 2024 the number rose to 11, while 2025 set a grim record with 20 fatalities, 16 of whom were motorcycle riders. Although 2026 is still only halfway through, 11 riders of two-wheeled vehicles and other vulnerable modes of transportation have already lost their lives, a fact that keeps concerns about road safety for these specific groups at a high level.

The Most Dangerous Days and Times

The data presented by Mr. Asiekkis to AlphaNews.Live reveal specific time patterns in fatal traffic collisions. During the first half of 2026, the highest number of fatalities occurred on Fridays and Sundays, with five deaths per day, followed by Saturdays with four fatalities. On the remaining days of the week, two fatalities were recorded per day. This pattern confirms that the three-day period of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday continues to account for the highest number of fatal collisions, a period during which travel, nightlife, and traffic on the roads increase.

Accordingly, the afternoon and evening hours remain the most dangerous. Specifically, five fatalities were recorded between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., while four deaths occurred during the time periods 8:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m., 12:00–16:00, and 08:00–12:00. According to the Traffic Police’s experience and data from previous years, most fatal collisions occur historically from the afternoon hours through the early morning.

At the same time, data from the last five years highlight the heavy human toll of traffic accidents, as more than 200 people have lost their lives on the roads. A large percentage of the victims were either young or elderly. It is noteworthy that in 2025 alone, 17 of the fatalities were over 60 years old, while 13 victims were in the 15-to-24 age group.

The data on motorcyclists is also particularly alarming. In 2025, 17 motorcyclists lost their lives, a number that, according to the Traffic Police, corresponds to approximately two-thirds of the total number of motorcyclist fatalities recorded during the three-year period from 2022 to 2024, highlighting this specific group of road users as the largest high-risk group.

It is worth noting that for 2026, the deadliest month so far has been February, during which six people lost their lives in areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. If we include the fatal accident that occurred on the territory of the British Bases, the total number of fatalities for that month rises to seven.

The main causes

Careless driving and distracted driving continue to be the leading causes of both fatal and serious traffic collisions in Cyprus, during the three-year period 2023–2025.

According to the data, careless driving accounts for 22.1% of fatal crashes and 29.4% of serious traffic accidents, by far the highest percentage among all causes.

In fatal collisions, the second most common cause is alcohol consumption (12.4%), followed by failure to keep to the left side of the road and driving under the influence of drugs, both at 10.6%. Also high on the list are pedestrians who cross the street carelessly or use the road incorrectly (8.8%), as well as speeding and turning right without due care (7.1% each).

As for serious traffic collisions, careless driving is followed by other causes at 22.1%, while turning right without due care ranks third (9.7%). This is followed by alcohol consumption (5.6%), the driver’s inexperience or being underage (5.4%), and pedestrians who cross the street carelessly or misuse the road (4%).

It is noteworthy that, while speeding is among the leading causes of fatal collisions, it accounts for only 1.3% of serious traffic accidents, a fact that suggests that when speed is a factor in a collision, it significantly increases the likelihood that the crash will be fatal. Similarly, driving under the influence of drugs is a factor in 10.6% of fatal collisions, but in only 0.2% of serious, non-fatal ones.

Overall, the data show that human error remains the primary cause of the most serious traffic accidents, with distraction, alcohol, and improper driving behavior playing a decisive role.

Fluctuations in Recent Years

The trend in fatal traffic collisions in recent years has shown fluctuations, which, according to road safety experts, must be evaluated with caution, particularly in the case of Cyprus. According to Mr. Asiekkis, in 2022—the year the traffic light system began operating—there were 35 fatal traffic accidents resulting in 41 deaths. In 2023, the number dropped to 32 fatal crashes and 34 fatalities; however, in 2024, it rose again to 36 fatal crashes with 41 fatalities, while 2025 ended with a record high of 45 fatal crashes and an equal number of fatalities.

As noted in a report by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), in countries with small populations, such as Cyprus and Malta, even small changes in the number of victims result in large percentage fluctuations. Therefore, annual fluctuations do not always constitute a reliable criterion on their own for drawing conclusions about road safety trends.
