Today marks the last day of unstable weather conditions, and starting tomorrow, Thursday, the weather will be clear, with temperatures gradually rising to as high as 40 degrees Celsius inland over the weekend, Andreas Chrysanthou, an officer with the Meteorology Department, told CNA.
He reiterated the yellow warning issued for today, which is in effect from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for isolated thunderstorms that will affect mountainous areas and theinterior. He said that heavy rainfall, similar to what we experienced yesterday and the day before, cannot be ruled out, with a slight chance of hail. “The main characteristic of summer thunderstorms, however, is the high intensity of rainfall and its localized nature.”
According to data from the relevant climatology division of the Department of Meteorology, Mr. Chrysanthou reported, it appears that we have experienced locally high rainfall rates, especially in mountainous areas, and “we have twice the amount of rainfall compared to what we statistically expect for the month of August.”
When asked about this, he said that very high rainfall levels were recorded at the Prodromos station in the mountains, as well as at Saitas, Lythrodonta, Panagia Bridge in Paphos, and Kornos. He specifically noted that three stations—Kornos, Lythrodonta, and Panagia Bridge—exceeded 1,000% of the average rainfall for the month of August.
A Change in the Weather Tomorrow
Starting tomorrow, Thursday, Mr. Chrysanthou said, the weather will change; it will be mostly sunny, with local cloud cover and rising temperatures. Tomorrow’s temperature will be an average of 3 degrees higher than today’s, while a further rise is expected on Friday, and temperatures may again hover around 40 degrees inland on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
“Today is the last day of this unstable weather. Starting tomorrow, we’ll see a very different scenario with temperatures rising,” he concluded.
