The Department of the Environment is awaiting an update from the Limassol District Local Government Organization regarding the developments planned by the Israeli investor in the abandoned settlement of Trozena.

The Department’s Deputy Director, Elena Stylianopoulou, explained on the Alpha News program that the area is part of the Natura 2000 Network for the protection of important bird species and is of exceptional natural beauty.

As he clarified, two older and four new applications for various developments in the historic community have been submitted so far, and the Limassol Environmental Authority has already been asked to conduct a special environmental impact assessment. The results were reviewed at a meeting last February, where it was found that the Israeli investor is planning additional developments in the area, beyond the six for which permits were requested.

Consequently, Ms. Stylianopoulou argued that the Department of the Environment is requesting to review the projects cumulatively and comprehensively as a “master plan,” while some of the requests are urban planning-related and concern the Limassol Urban Planning Area.

She explained that the village is located within a residential zone where renovations, repairs, and restorations of buildings that have suffered from the ravages of time and abandonment are permitted.

Ms. Stylianopoulou noted that the EOA is responsible for addressing any unauthorized interventions in the settlement, such as the clearing of vineyards or other vegetation.
