The newborn diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease continues to fight for his life at Makareio Hospital

Samples from a clinic and a baby's home are the focus of microbiological testing

The newborn, who is in critical condition and on mechanical ventilation, remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Makarios Hospital, the newborn who was diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease at a private clinic in Nicosia.

According to pediatrician Panagiotis Giagou, who spoke on the Alpha Kalimera show, the first 24 hours are critical, as the situation remains fluid since the infant is being treated for severe pneumonia.

At this time, doctors are monitoring the baby’s progress and assessing how well the medication is working, as the first week, at least, is considered the most critical in such cases.

At the private clinic in Nicosia, where the 23-day-old newborn was born, the ward floor has been closed, with all other newborns having already been transferred to other hospitals.

Furthermore, by decision of the Ministry of Health, the clinic is temporarily not accepting new patients.

Speaking on the program, microbiologist and member of the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiological Surveillance Unit, Michalis Mendris, pointed out that there are some preliminary results from testing the clinic’s water system, which showed a certain concentration of the microbe; however, everything is still under investigation, as results from additional samples taken from the system are pending. Furthermore, as he noted, samples were also taken from the family’s home water system, since the baby had gone home after his birth. However, what matters, Mr. Mendris said, is the concentration level of the microbe, since it is not unusual for it to be detected in a water system. He noted that it will take a few more days for the test results to come back, with the final results expected perhaps next Thursday.
