The father of the two children who lost their lives on June 28, 2026, in Xylofagou appeared once again before the Court of the British Bases in Dhekelia, with the Chief Justice issuing instructions regarding the proceedings.  The defendant’s request to travel to Bulgaria for his children’s funeral will be considered following a written motion by the defense.

During today’s proceedings, the defendant appeared with his new defense attorney, Christos Theodoulou. The proceedings took place via videoconference with a Supreme Court Justice from the United Kingdom.  The Supreme Court Justice first addressed technical details of the case and then moved on to key details.

Addressing the defendant, the Supreme Court Justice stated, “I know you want to go to Bulgaria for your children’s funeral. Mr. Theodoulou will file your request in writing, and the Prosecution will respond in writing.”

In two weeks from today—that is, on July 30—another hearing will be held before the Court, and the defendant will be present to hear the Supreme Judge’s decision. The next hearing has been scheduled for September 22.

The Chief Justice ordered the prosecution to provide the evidence to the defendant’s defense attorney. At that hearing, the charges will be read again, and the defendant will respond by pleading guilty or not guilty.

If the defendant pleads not guilty, the next hearing is scheduled for November 30. If both parties request it, it is possible for the subsequent hearings to take place earlier.

Regarding whether there is a request for the defendant to be released on bail, the Chief Justice stated that a relevant request must be submitted and that the proceedings will take place behind closed doors.

The Supreme Court Justice also noted, “If there is a request for the hearings to be held in open or closed court, it must be stated by both sides.”

The prosecution replied, “We’ll see as we go along,” while the defense attorney stated that he was not in a position to respond to this issue at this time.

At the previous hearing, charges were read against the father of the two children.

Specifically, the charge the father faces is causing death by reckless and imprudent conduct, in violation of Article 2010 of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentenceof up to 4 years or a fine of 2,500 pounds for each offense, or a combination of the two penalties.
