A broad-based meeting of all relevant agencies was held on Thursday morning at the Larnaca Police Headquarters to discuss the situation at an apartment complex, with the aim of coordinating efforts to investigate the complaints that have been filed recently.
Participants in the meeting included, among others, the Police, the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, the Social Welfare Services, the Cyprus Electricity Authority (AHK), the Health Services, the Larnaca District Local Government Organization, and the Municipality of Larnaca.
As stated by the Larnaca Police Director, Ioannis Kapnoulis, the meeting examined the role and responsibilities of each agency, and decisions on next steps in this specific area are expected to be made.
As he said, the goal is to investigate all complaints that have been filed, and there are plans to check on the individuals residing in the complex as well. Simultaneous actions will be carried out by the relevant agencies as part of a joint operation.
Regarding the complaints, Mr. Kapnoulis confirmed that complaints concerning the complex were filed with the police on Wednesday and will be investigated to determine whether any criminal offenses have been committed.
According to media reports, two individuals appeared at the Larnaca Police Headquarters yesterday, who reportedly claimed that they had purchased apartments in the complex, in which, they allege, other people are living without their consent. The complaints include, among other things, allegations that these individuals have reportedly entered into agreements with third parties to reside in the apartments. The complaints will be investigated by the police.
At the same time, a separate complaint is being investigated regarding allegations of threats against the Chair of the complex’s Management Committee.
It should be noted that the Management Committee has recently filed a series of complaints regarding the situation in the complex. Among other things, allegations have been made regarding the illegal use of apartments, subletting of units without the owners’ approval, as well as illegal connections or theft of electricity and water. These specific allegations are currently under investigation by the EAC and the Larnaca Energy Regulatory Authority.
The complex consists of five apartment buildings and is located in the area near the port of Larnaca.
On May 27, during an operation by the Aliens and Immigration Service, foreign nationals reportedly jumped from balconies in an attempt to avoid arrest. One of them lost his life, while two others were injured.
