Sadness and shock prevail following the death of the well-known businessman, Dimis Mavropoulos, who “passed away” in the stormy seas off Cape Greco after becoming trapped in the wreckage of his boat, which sank and was destroyed due to the severe weather that swept across Cyprus.
For its part, the police have been conducting new investigations at the site since early Sunday morning to determine the exact circumstances that led to this unimaginable tragedy. Meanwhile, the 77-year-old businessman’s daughter and wife are being treated at the hospital, though their condition is not cause for concern.
According to the police, officers have been at the scene of the tragedy since early this morning conducting an investigation, and the circumstances under which the unfortunate businessman became trapped in the wreckage of the boat will also be closely examined. Investigators are looking into whether the ill-fated boat was anchored at the scene.
Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (KSED) has released new video footage of the dramatic rescue operation carried out to save those in danger at Cape Greco. We remind you that a total of two boats sank, while a third was also in danger.

As one of the most prominent Cypriot rally drivers of his era, he brought honor to Limassol and Cyprus in both Cypriot and international competitions. He later turned his great love for cars into a significant legacy by founding the Cyprus Historic and Classic Car Museum in Limassol. His connection to the Limassol Carnival was also special. He was a true carnival enthusiast, a man who embodied the joy and extroversion of our city, and in 2014 he wore the crown of the Carnival King. His presence at carnival events over the years was an integral part of this great Limassol tradition.
At the same time, he took an active interest in public affairs and the progress of Limassol, contributing in his own way to the public discourse about the city and its future. Today, Limassol bids farewell to one of its own. A man with a passion for life, for cars, for Carnival, and above all, for his city. The timeline of the tragedy
According to a statement from the National Search and Rescue Coordination Center (KSED), at 2:30 p.m. the National Search and Rescue Plan was activated “NEARCHOS” was activated in the Agioi Anargyroi maritime area, at Cape Greco, with the aim of rescuing people in danger on three vessels.
Two of the three vessels were completely destroyed after running aground on rocks due to severe rough seas.
The unfortunate businessman had previously been reported missing, and a search operation was launched to locate him. He was eventually found unconscious on the rocks and rescued by a National Guard helicopter. He was transported to Famagusta General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The operation involved a helicopter from the Police Aviation Operations Unit, a helicopter from the National Guard’s 460th Search and Rescue Squadron, a patrol from the Famagusta Police Directorate, members of the Special Rescue Unit (EMAK) and the Famagusta Fire Station, as well as ambulances from the Ambulance Service.
A total of six people were rescued.
The first person was rescued by a patrol from the Famagusta Police Directorate and is in good health.

Search and Rescue helicopters rescued five more people. Of these, two are in good health and, after receiving first aid, were released.
Two other people were transported to Famagusta General Hospital for treatment.
The sixth person, the unfortunate businessman, was pulled unconscious from the water by a Search and Rescue helicopter and transported to the Famagusta General Hospital, where, unfortunately, he was pronounced dead.
