Mourning for the well-known businessman Dimos Mavropoulos, who was trapped in the wreckage of his boat at Cape Greco and was recovered dead from the stormy sea.

The 77-year-old businessman’s boat sank and was destroyed due to the severe storm that swept through Cyprus. The unfortunate businessman had previously been reported missing, prompting a search operation to locate him. He was eventually found unconscious on the rocks and rescued by a National Guard helicopter. He was transported to the Famagusta General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Who Was Dimis Mavropoulos

From the special stages of Cypriot rallies to the creation of a museum showcasing pieces of automotive history, Dimis Mavropoulos’s life revolved for decades around his two great passions: business and motorsports.

Born in Limassol in 1949, Dimis Mavropoulos was particularly well-known in the city, both for his business activities and for his prominent presence in the world of Cypriot rallying.

His involvement with cars began at an early age and soon progressed from a mere interest to active competition. From the late 1960s, he was behind the wheel in rally races, participating in events and special stages in Cyprus with various race cars.

The highlight of his racing career came in 1986. That year, he was crowned the Cyprus Rally Champion and finished second in the Rothmans International Cyprus Rally. These successes established him as one of the leading figures during a period when Cypriot rallying was experiencing a particular boom.

At the same time, alongside his racing career, he was building his own business empire. He started out in the trade and export of Cypriot agricultural products to the British market, following in the family tradition, and subsequently expanded his activities into various sectors, including real estate.

His love for cars, however, was not limited to racing. Starting in the 1990s, he began collecting historic and classic vehicles, while also investing in their restoration and maintenance. Over the years, the collection grew and became particularly valuable.

The next step was to transform this personal collection into a space open to the public. In 2014, the Cyprus Historic & Classic Motor Museum was established in Limassol, with him donating the vehicles from his collection. The museum became a place where automotive history could be preserved and presented to younger generations.

For Mavropoulos, the cars currently on display in the museum’s galleries are not merely collectibles. They reflect a significant part of his personal journey, from his racing years and special stages to his long-standing involvement with classic cars.

His journey thus connects different aspects of public life in Limassol. Business, motorsports, collecting, and, ultimately, the creation of a museum that keeps alive an important aspect of Cyprus’s automotive history.

His involvement in the city’s community life was yet another facet of his public engagement. Dimitris Mavropoulos attempted, at various times, to play a more active role in Limassol’s municipal affairs.

In the 2011 municipal elections, he ran for city councilor with the DIKO party, and five years later, in 2016, he ran again for a seat on the Limassol Municipal Council, this time with the Citizens’ Alliance.

A journey spanning decades, in which activism, entrepreneurship, collecting vintage cars, and establishing a museum have marked distinct milestones in a life inextricably linked to cars and Limassol.
