Cyprus recorded the highest amount of food waste per capita among EU member states for which data are available in 2024.
More specifically, according to data published by Eurostat on Tuesday, Cyprus recorded 295 kilograms per person, compared to an EU average of 129 kilograms.
According to the data, households in Cyprus generated 78 kilograms of food waste per resident, compared to 69 kilograms in the EU. In restaurants and food service establishments, the corresponding amount was 34 kilograms in Cyprus, compared to 15 kilograms in the EU.
At the same time, in Cyprus, the food and beverage manufacturing industry generated 73 kilograms of waste per capita, compared with 25 kilograms in the EU. In retail trade and other food distribution activities, waste amounted to 62 kilograms per capita in Cyprus, compared to 10 kilograms in the EU, while in primary production the corresponding figures were 48 and 10 kilograms.
At the EU level, according to Eurostat, a total of 57.9 million metric tons of food waste was generated in 2024, an increase of 0.7% compared to 2023, when 57.5 million metric tons were generated. The figures include both edible and inedible parts of food.
