“I’m going to see this through to the end. Those responsible will be held accountable; whoever needs to go to prison with the murderers will go.” Andri Charalambous, Marios’s mother

With a voice that betrays her unbearable pain and the many unanswered “whys,” the mother of little Marios is demanding a full investigation into the circumstances under which her son was declared brain-dead after being diagnosed with viral meningitis.

Standing by her side are dozens of citizens who participated this morning in a protest outside Limassol General Hospital.

“Tomorrow it could be your baby, your father, or us. We deserve our fate for still putting up with them.”

The family alleges that the severity of the four-year-old’s condition was not assessed in a timely manner and that there were a series of errors and omissions.

“It’s unacceptable for a baby with meningitis to suffer from edema and herniation, and for you to come and give him only fever reducers. // As they told me on the 14th of the month, ‘Your baby will go blind’—right in front of the baby—and in the end, the person who told me that was wrong about that, too. My baby didn’t go blind—he was left brain-dead. I would have accepted it if he’d gone blind because I would have had him with me. I would have been his eyes, but my baby didn’t end up blind. They were wrong about that, too—my baby ended up brain-dead.” Andri Charalambous, Marios’s mother

Investigation ongoing

The Cyprus Police (OKYPY) expresses understanding for the pain and the desire of the family and relatives to receive answers. In a statement, it reiterates that a police investigation is underway, as part of which, among other things, statements have already been taken from the personnel involved, while the internal investigation into the case is also continuing.

“In the context of the investigation into this case, it is important to uphold the fundamental principles of the rule of law, including the presumption of innocence, until the relevant proceedings are concluded, and to refrain from making any characterizations.” OKYPY

The Organization states that it remains steadfastly committed to the principles of transparency, accountability, and the protection of the rights of both patients and healthcare professionals, ensuring that every complaint is investigated with due seriousness, without prejudice and without interference.
