The Cabinet decided on Wednesday to amend existing legislation regarding the prohibition of vessels from leaving the territory of the Republic, as well as their mandatory movement to a safe haven or port, as an interim measure until the establishment of the Coast Guard, the Council of Ministers decided on Wednesday, announced Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hatzimanoli.
According to the Deputy Minister, it was also decided that the Deputy Ministry would approve the establishment of a Committee on Anchorage Areas, chaired by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and comprising representatives from all relevant government and other agencies, which will comprehensively examine issues related to safety, the conditions for vessels’ stay, as well as the collection and proper management of waste, with the aim of ensuring unified coordination among government agencies operating at sea with clearly defined responsibilities.
According to reports, the Committee on Anchorages, whose establishment will be promoted immediately, will include representatives from the Ports Authority, the Department of the Environment, the Department of Fisheries, the Port Police, and local authorities.
