A victim of a text message (SMS) scam on his cell phone, in which recipients are urged to make a supposed out-of-court fine payment, a 52-year-old man appears to have fallen victim to this scam; he filed a complaint on Friday with the Nicosia Police Department. After receiving a text message regarding an alleged unpaid out-of-court fine, he entered his credit card information to pay it and subsequently received a notification from the bank that he had been charged €2,326.
In a statement, the Police point out that the phenomenon of fraudulent messages intended to deceive citizens continues and reiterate that they never contact citizens in this manner or through any other communication platform to ask citizens to pay any fines or for any other reason.
These messages contain a link through which the perpetrators urge recipients to make a purported out-of-court fine payment. As a precaution, the Police recommend that the public avoid clicking on such links and never provide or enter personal or banking information on unknown websites.
Finally, to verify any messages citizens receive, the public is urged to contact the relevant organizations through their official communication channels.
