The two defendants, a 48-year-old and a 27-year-old, appeared today before the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court in connection with a case of torture at a property in Pyla.
At a previous hearing, the two were charged and pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
The case has been scheduled for a hearing on November 10.
On October 12, the 27-year-old defendant’s objection to remaining in custody will be considered.
It should be noted that the first defendant, a 48-year-old man, had filed a motion requesting that the case be dismissed on the grounds of abuse of process.
He based his motion on the fact that two separate cases had been filed against him, one concerning the incidents outside the Larnaca Police Headquarters and one regarding the torture at a property in Pyla, whereas, in his view, they should have been included in a single indictment.
His motion was rejected by the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court as premature, since the current evidence clearly cannot support his claim of abuse of process.
The first defendant, aged 48, faces charges relating to subjecting a person to torture, depriving a person of liberty with the intent to place that person at risk of serious bodily injury, causing serious bodily injury, assaults resulting in actual bodily injury, and extortion.
The second defendant, aged 27, faces charges related to deprivation of liberty, subjecting a person to torture, and assault.
In this case, one additional person is still being sought; an arrest warrant has been issued for that individual in connection with this specific case, and other alleged accomplices of the two defendants are being sought, as video footage indicates there are other perpetrators who have not yet been identified.
There are six victims. They include three Cypriots—one of whom is outside Cyprus—an Indian national, who is outside Cyprus, and an Arab national, who is in Cyprus. The sixth victim appears to be a European citizen, and efforts are underway to identify him.
The Larnaca CID is continuing its investigation.
