In anticipation of the start of the new school year and pursuant to the Ministerial Decision dated August 27, 2025, the Ministry of Transportation, Communications, and Public Works informs the public that the subsidy program for student bus fares will continue during the 2026–2027 school year, in collaboration with public-service domestic road passenger transport companies, as part of the state’s social policy.
Specifically, for the period from September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2027, the monthly student fare is set at €5, with a government subsidy of €17. The annual student fare is set at €30, with a government subsidy of €190 per student.

Effective September 1, 2025, and thereafter, all children from large families and families of five attending public secondary and technical schools are exempt from paying the fare. To qualify for this exemption, a large-family ID card or a certificate confirming a five-member family must be presented.
A monthly or annual zero-cost pass is also issued to low-income students and children of recipients of the Minimum Guaranteed Income (MGI).
Minors who are under the care and guardianship of Social Welfare Services and do not attend school are also eligible for the student fare category. The amount of €5 for the monthly fare and €30 for the annual fare is paid by the Social Welfare Services, while the amounts of €17 and €190, respectively, are subsidized by the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Public Works. To obtain the pass, a relevant certificate from the Social Welfare Services must be presented.
To obtain an annual student pass, students must obtain a personalized Motion card. To obtain the card, students must present a certificate of enrollment and/or a student ID for the current school year.
During the first week of the new school year, that is, through Friday, September 11, 2026, students will ride for free to allow sufficient time for the issuance of personalized Motion cards. The issuance process began on September 1, 2026, and the public is urged to take the necessary steps in a timely manner to obtain their cards.
Starting Monday, September 14, 2026, students must have a valid fare to ride the bus.
These measures are intended to facilitate students’ daily commutes and encourage more students to use public transportation.
