The search and rescue operation launched on Saturday afternoon at Cape Greco ended tragically, following the problems caused by rough seas due to bad weather in the area.
A Greek Cypriot man lost his life when the boat he was on ran aground on rocks. The man had previously been reported missing, and a search operation was launched to locate him.
He was eventually found unconscious on the rocks and was rescued by a National Guard helicopter. He was transported to Famagusta General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to a statement from the National Search and Rescue Coordination Center (KSED), at 2:30 p.m. the National Search and Rescue Plan “NEARCHOS” was activated in the Agioi Anargyroi maritime area, at Cape Greco, with the aim of rescuing people in danger on three vessels.
Two of the three vessels were completely destroyed after running aground on rocks due to heavy seas.
A helicopter from the Police Aviation Operations Unit, a helicopter from the National Guard’s 460th Search and Rescue Squadron, a patrol from the Famagusta Police Directorate, members of the Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) and the Famagusta Fire Department, as well as ambulances from the Ambulance Service.
A total of six people were rescued.
The first person was rescued by a patrol from the Famagusta Police Department and is in good health.

Search and Rescue helicopters rescued five more people. Of these, two are in good health and, after receiving first aid, were released.
Two other people were transported to Famagusta General Hospital for treatment.
The sixth person, a Greek Cypriot man, was recovered unconscious by a Search and Rescue helicopter and transported to Famagusta General Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.
