An all-night operation by the Fire Department, which was put on alert shortly before midnight.

The fire, which broke out among parked vehicles in Kaimakli, spread rapidly and completely destroyed 22 vehicles that were in an open area.

“At 11:48 p.m., we responded to a fire involving 22 vehicles in an open area (field) used for spare parts in Kaimakli, Nicosia District. To extinguish the fire, our personnel used breathing apparatus and water hoses in combination with foam. Four fire trucks responded.”

Police and fire authorities conducted a lengthy investigation at the scene to determine whether the fire was the result of arson or an accidental blaze. The exact causes have not yet been determined, while tomorrow, Monday, members of the Electrical and Mechanical Services are expected to visit the scene to inspect a suspicious vehicle that was brought to the site just yesterday.

Fire in a referee’s vehicle

Emergency responders were also called to a fire that broke out in the early morning hours in a vehicle belonging to a handball referee. The fire spread to a second vehicle. While police investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, the Handball Federation, in a statement, has described the incident as a criminal act.

“Such actions are absolutely unacceptable; they violate the principles of sportsmanship and have no place in the world of handball. The protection of referees, athletes, coaches, officials, and everyone who serves handball is a non-negotiable priority for the Hellenic Handball Federation. Disagreement with refereeing decisions or any other sporting development cannot and must never serve as an excuse for threats, intimidation, or criminal acts.”

However, according to reports, the referee appears to have stated in his testimony that the vehicle had a mechanical problem.
