The severe weather conditions currently affecting Cyprus with severe thunderstorms, hail, and high winds, while there remains a possibility of tornadoes, Panagiotis Georgiou, an official with the Meteorology Department, told CNA.
As he noted, conditions in the area will remain unstable until 6:00 p.m., and severe weather is therefore expected. He noted that tornadoes have already been recorded at sea, off the coast of Larnaca, adding that “in an area of intense instability, there is also this possibility of a tornado.”

When asked which areas are affected, Mr. Georgiou said that the weather phenomena have essentially affected almost all of Cyprus. Heavy rainfall was recorded, among other places, inland, in mountainous areas, in the north, and in the Kato Pyrgos area, while, as he noted, “the area that has not been greatly affected is the region north of the city of Paphos, but there is some local activity there.”
He added that in some areas the weather phenomena have already subsided, while in others they remain intense. When asked where the storm is heading, he said that “the storm is gradually moving eastward. By this afternoon, it will be east of Cyprus.”
Temperatures 10 degrees lower
He also noted that the drop in temperature is particularly noticeable, as it is currently about 10 degrees below normal levels for this time of year. As he noted, the temperature is around 27 degrees Celsius, compared to an average of about 36–37 degrees Celsius.
Starting tomorrow, however, temperatures are expected to rise gradually, reaching seasonal averages by Wednesday.
Mr. Georgiou stated that today’s severe weather conditions are due to an organized weather system that reached the region from the north and caused both the inclement weather and the significant drop in temperature.
When asked whether these conditions would continue in the coming days, he said they are occurring only today. Regarding the coming days, he said that from tomorrow through Wednesday, there is a possibility of isolated showers, mainly in the mountains, as well as a small chance of thunderstorms. He clarified, however, that weather events of the same intensity as today’s are not expected.
